Botox (Botulinum Toxin) is a chemical toxin that is used for a variety of cosmetic and medical treatments. It has been widely used as a non-surgical way to treat many ailments as well as eliminate wrinkles from the face, especially the forehead and around the eyes. Botox injections work by causing a very targeted and limited paralysis of the muscles that move certain facial areas. This reduces the appearance and formation of wrinkles.
At Midwest Vein Care, we offer a variety of cosmetic treatment options and rejuvenation services. This includes Botox injections as well as other services such as chemical peel therapy, Juvederm injections, and photofacial sessions. When Botox is injected in the facial muscles, it relaxes them by blocking the nerve impulses. This results in a temporary paralysis, which stops the muscles from contracting and softens the wrinkles. It typically takes three to five days from the time of administering the injections to begin seeing the results. On average, these results will max out at about 2 weeks and can last from four to six months in most patients. Over time, the muscles are trained to relax and each time the Botox injections are administered, the wrinkles may return more slowly with less severity.
Botox treatment is relatively simple and safe… and can be performed in a short office visit. There is no anesthesia required for treatment. The needles used to administer Botox injections are very fine, so they cause little pain or discomfort.
Botox injections are generally very safe with minimal potential complications. It is best to avoid anti-inflammatory medicine and aspirin prior to treatment so as to prevent excessive bruising. Patients will read an informative document regarding contraindications and before and after instructions.
As with any medical procedure, there are certain risks involved with Botox injections. These include:
The most common use for Botox injections is to treat the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines on the face. Just a small quantity of Botox is enough to treat these cosmetic issues.
There are also a number of non-cosmetic uses for Botox injections as well. For example, Botox can be used to treat:
