Medically Necessary Vein Treatments
Is your vein treatment medically necessary?
Do your viens cause you any of the following?
Lifestyle disruption, cramping, throbbing, burning, swelling, feeling of heaviness or fatigue, alterations in skin pigmentation, vein size, complications such as phlebitis, bleeding veins, and skin ulceration.
Although you may be suffering from some or all of the above symptoms, each case is handled individually and treatments cannot be deemed medically necessary without a proper diagnosis and approval from your insurance provider.
Doppler ultrasound or duplex studies are typically covered by insurance providers as a medically necessary diagnostic tool. The experts at Midwest Vein Care, through detailed history and physical examination will determine if you need to have this duplex study. Insurance providers will use this study to determine if your vein treatments are considered to be medically neccesary.
Surgical procedures are more likely than injection treatments or laser/light therapy to be considered as a medically necessary procedure.
Many times there are underlying problems with spider veins which could be consdered medically necessary.
If sclerotherapy is used with endovenous ablation, it may be covered if the criteria for reasonable and necessary are met.
Surgical techniques used to treat large varicose veins that may be considered medically necessary are:
- Ligation (tying off a vein)
- Microincisional phlebectomy (ambulatory phlebectomy)
- Stripping (pulling out a long segment of vein with a special instrument)
- Endoluminal radiofrequency ablation (e.g., VNUS® Closure™ System)
- Endovenous thermal ablation, endoluminal laser ablation (e.g. EVLT endovenous laser therapy)
